Angela Gore knew from the time she was in seventh grade that she wanted to own her own business. At an age when most young girls are fretting over what color nail polish to wear to school, Gore was developing her entrepreneurial skills. “I had a pretty lucrative candy business going at my locker in school, until my principal shut me down. He asked me what organization I was selling candy for, and I told him it was for myself. The excitement of the sale, and seeing my classmates so happy when they bought my candy really left an impression on me that I never forgot,” Gore explained.
Today, Gore gets that same sense of excitement when she sees customers come out of the dressing rooms at her Jeffersonville boutique, Sapphire on Spring. For her, this store is more than a business, though. It has become a place where she not only makes people feel good about themselves by helping them pick out something to wear, but it is also where she can connect with people on a real, personal level. “There’s a connection I have with every customer that walks in Sapphire on Spring. We become friends,” she said. “I could go on and on, but in short, I just love everything about it. I actually get excited about going to work.” These personal connections and her love of overcoming the challenges of running a small business are what have made Gore so successful.
She opened her first fashion boutique in 2011: a store in Madison called Blush on Main. With hard work and an eye for style, she was able to make Blush one of the premiere boutiques in Southern Indiana. However, after her husband’s job moved her and her family, which includes three children, to Floyds Knobs, Gore decided to sell Blush on Main to a close friend. She opened Sapphire on Spring in November 2015.
“The Sapphire on Spring shopper is confident, classy and smart,” said Gore. This description is evident when you look at the store’s inventory, which boasts an impressive selection of fashion-forward apparel and accessories at reasonable prices.
Currently, Sapphire on Spring offers everything from boyfriend denim to embellished cocktail dresses, and Betsey Johnson purses. The boutique also carries handmade jewelry by a local designer, Quinley Etheridge of Sincerely Quinley.
When asked what her favorite piece in the store is at the moment, Gore has a soft spot for a periwinkle and white stripe blouse that has corset detailing in the back. “Periwinkle is such a fun color to wear, and when you pair this top with denim,” she explained, “the outfit says that spring is finally here and summer is just around the corner.”
