From unique vintage fashion to beautiful antique furniture and home accessories, Southern Indiana has much to offer in the world of secondhand shopping. I’ve compiled a list of boutiques from all over the region (see page 24) but had to stop ‘n’ shop at Mariposa Fine Consignments, a local gem located in the historic White House Center in downtown New Albany.
Mariposa’s inventory boasts high-end designers such as Tory Burch, Michael Kors and Prada, but also caters to shoppers who are simply looking for those one-of-a-kind vintage pieces. The selection of gently-used clothing and accessories is impressive; so are the home décor offerings. Vintage books and upholstered chairs topped my list of must-have home items from this local haunt. However, Mariposa’s repurposed items were the most impressive. The shop’s owner, Michelle Wells, turned an old crane elevator into an über chic bookshelf and even crafted old parts from a factory assembly line into unique tables. Wells’ love of making something old new and interesting again is not only inspiring, it is also a little more economical for all of us who truly enjoy finding a good bargain.
Mixing vintage pieces with newer items in your closet is a chic way to stand out with your ensemble.
When thrift shopping, consider purchasing items you wouldn’t normally think to wear. If you are getting a bargain, you can be a little more creative with your style, while not sacrificing quality at the same time.
Adding vintage accessories to your wardrobe is an easy way to guarantee that you will have a one-of-a-kind look.
