Jeff Miller of VO2 Multisport with Whisky
A Q&A by Jessica Malloy | Photo by John Sodrel
RECENTLY, EXTOL MAGAZINE FIELDED A NUMBER OF QUESTIONS FROM READERS WHO WANT ANSWERS ABOUT EXERCISE AND HEALTH. SO, WE SENT WRITER JESSICA MALLOY TO JEFF MILLER, OWNER OF VO2 MULTISPORT, TO FIND THEM.
LIKE SO MANY OTHERS, ONE OF OUR READERS SAID SHE HAS ALREADY GIVEN UP ON HER NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO GET FIT. WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO START FRESH NOW INSTEAD OF WAITING UNTIL 2017?
The easiest way is to find an accountability partner: someone to hold you accountable to your goals and aspirations, whether it’s a spouse or best friend.
Or go to a gym and hire a personal trainer if you can.
DEBBIE FROM SCOTTSBURG IS INTERESTED IN COMPLETING THE KENTUCKY DERBY FESTIVAL MINIMARATHON. IS IT TOO LATE?
If she gets started now, I think that’s very feasible. You might not do it as fast as you want, but at the end of
the day, as long as you put the training in, you can get through a mini even if it’s a run-walk. You just have to have realistic expectations. I don’t think it’s too late at all.
BOB FROM NEW ALBANY IS FIT, 50 AND IN SHAPE BUT WANTS TO TURN IT UP A NOTCH OR TWO (OR TWENTY). HE’S ALSO COMPETITIVE BUT HAS NO IDEA WHAT’S OUT THERE FOR SOMEONE LIKE HIM WHO LOVES ANY KIND OF ACTIVITY. CAN YOU HELP?
I think you have to look at what “turning it up a notch” means. Does he want to run a faster 5K or 10K? Does he want to get into cycling or triathlons? There are a lot of different ways to express fitness abilities. Narrow down what you want to do, more of a rifle approach as opposed to a shotgun approach.
JUDY AND CHRIS LISTEN TO YOUR EXTOL PODCASTING SEGMENTS AND KNOW YOU’RE A DAD. WHAT TIPS CAN YOU OFFER PARENTS LIKE THEM WHO WANT TO RAISE KIDS WHO VALUE THEIR HEALTH?
I think it’s a partnership. Children model themselves after you. All of a sudden, you’re going to lace up your shoes for a run and your eight-year-old is going to want to go with you, and so you take them with you. It’s about them in that point in time.
ELLA OF MADISON SAYS SHE NEEDS TO LOSE 10 POUNDS. WHAT’S THE EASIEST, HEALTHIEST WAY TO DO THAT? Diet and exercise—that’s the healthiest way to do it. If you monitor your intake, you’re going to drop weight. You can cut out little things. I try and get most of my carbs in around morning and lunch, and I usually don’t eat dinner past 6 o’clock.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUYING SHOES FROM A BUSINESS LIKE YOURS (VO2 MULTISPORT IN LOUISVILLE) AS OPPOSED TO PURCHASING A PAIR OF SNEAKERS FROM A DEPARTMENT STORE? IF THE SHOE FITS, WEAR IT — RIGHT? OR NO?
Most of the time you go to a specialty store, everyone at the store is riding, swimming cycling; so, we know and understand the product very well. In a department store, people are trying to move product.
DEFINE VO2 MULTISPORT.
