Story & Photos By JD Dotson
Now that the hubby and I have a six-month-old beautiful goddaughter in our lives, we need stuff! While we would like to promise her parents that we will not spoil our little girl, I think we all know she will be getting everything she wants, so in this edition of MY FAVORITE THINGS, I thought I’d go on the hunt for a few baby-friendly items along with items for adults who have a little one in their lives.
THE DIAPER FAIRY COTTAGE
1811 Bardstown Road | Louisville | 502.708.1018 | www.diaperfairy.net
Right inside the door of the Diaper Fairy Cottage, I was instantly drawn to a colorful LILLEbaby carrier. The name of this particular style? The Guncles
(get it??). While it’s pricy – $139.99– friends tell me it’s worth its weight in gold. Plus, it’s perfect for carrying around baby while keeping your hands free, which is priceless to a new parent or grandparent. For mom and baby, I found a food-grade silicone and dishwasher-safe necklace by Jellystone ($25.99). It’s cute, functional, safe and satisfies’ baby’s desire to gnaw on every. single. thing.
EJ AND DOT’S CHILDREN’S BOUTIQUE
515 Main St. | Jasper | 812.634.7070
At EJ and Dot’s in Jasper I picked out the perfect olive-colored clip-on flower with headband ($5),
a rainbow tutu (because who doesn’t love a tutu, especially one that only costs $9.95), and Piggy Paint ($6.95), which is non-toxic, water-based, odorless and hypoallergenic fingernail polish safe for tiny fingers and toes and available in a huge array of colors and sparkles.
KOERBER’S FINE JEWELRY
3095 Blackiston Mill Road | New Albany 812.945.5959 | www.koerbersfinejewelry.com
Expectant mothers need a bit of spoiling too. I found a charm bracelet ($35) by Alex and Ani
at Koerber’s announcing the arrival of your little bundle via stork. Available in blue or pink with gold or silver, Alex and Ani donate proceeds of every bangle made to the March of Dimes to help moms have full-term pregnancies and to research the problems that threaten the health of babies.
REGALO
234 Pearl St. | New Albany 812.542.6567 | www.regaloart.com
I know it’s cliché, but let’s be honest: Dads need a bit of help sometimes, so check out The Baby Owners Manual: Operating Instructions, Trouble Shooting Tips and Advice on First Year Maintenance ($16.95). Full of useful parenting tips, it’s written in a style that dad might be more accustomed to reading.
SAPPHIRE ON SPRING BOUTIQUE
326 Spring St. | Jeffersonville | 812.920.0017
Any moment now, our little goddaughter is going to be zooming across the floor. She is already revving her little engines and I want to be prepared. Knowing her mother’s love for pink camo, I can’t believe I found these knee pads ($9) to protect her knees for that moment she takes off.
TWIGGY ORIGINALS BY CARLA TERWILLEGER
I love love love this painting for our baby’s nursery by local artist Twiggy (she’s so good she only goes by one name). This particular one – acrylic and glitter on 11 by 14 inch canvas, $40 – bears a fitting message to hang in her room. It’s not only one filled with love but also acceptance, tolerance and pride.
Each issue, we send our resident explorer JD Dotson on the hunt for items that embody the spirit of Southern Indiana and make perfect gifts for family, friends or even yourself. We hope you enjoy JD’s picks as mush as we did. And if you have a suggestion of your own, send an email to extol@extolmag.com. Just be sure to put “My Favorite Things” in the subject line.
