MY HUSBAND and I will celebrate our third wedding anniversary on Oct. 4. Once again, we’ll dress up in our wedding attire and head to Culbertson Mansion, which is where we had our wedding photos taken by Tony Bennett and have continued to do so every year. At first, it seemed like a silly tradition to start, especially because I was pregnant and exhausted, and we were overwhelmed with the thought of being new parents. But when we had the photos taken the following year – this time with our infant daughter and a vow to reflect what our marriage was like at that time – we treasured them and can’t wait to do it again.

No one ever said marriage was easy. On particularly tough days, I’ll look at those photos for a few moments and recall the reasons why I love my husband. It’s funny how gazing at the images can quickly make me forget why I was ever upset in the first place.

As you peruse these pages, you’ll find dozens of photos and stories, most of which are beautiful tales about love and matrimony. You’ll also find a couple pieces about loss and how to move forward. It’s so easy to take our loved ones for granted. My hope is that this, our inaugural wedding issue, offers a gentle reminder of that fact.

Be sure to flip past the wedding section so you don’t miss the features on Match, the new cigar and bourbon bar in New Albany, the Carnegie Center and the New Albany Historic Homes Tour.

THE EYES HAVE IT

I recently tried microblading at Body & Brow Boutique with owner Kate Ashton. A form of permanent makeup, Kate etched hair-like lines into my brows to cover up where I’ve lost hair over the years and add pigment, which eliminates the need for eyebrow powder, gel or pencil. I’ll share my before and after photos in the next issue once I get my final touch up. But I already couldn’t be more thrilled. J.Nicolle Salon & Spa offers a variety of services, including – now – a lash lift. While I haven’t tried it yet, several friends have and they’re raving about the natural process that adds curl and definition. • J. Nicolle Salon & Spa • 113 E. Tucker’s American Favorites

Much More Than A Sports Bar

By Angie Fenton | Photos by Jason Applegate

OK, there’s no denying Tucker’s American Favorites is the perfect place to watch sports. The restaurant – which is located at 2441 State St. in New Albany – boasts three 118” big screen TVs and flat screens nearly everywhere you look, all of which broadcast one sport or another. There isn’t a bad seat in the house, especially in the large main dining area, which has tables and booths, including giant half-circle ones that can fit six people or more.

Additionally, the beer is cold, the wings plump and spicy (or not; your choice) and the bartenders, hosts and wait staff attentive and friendly. Plus, there’s an array of food choices ranging from the ooey, gooey and oh-so-delicious Queso & Chips ($6.99) and Tucker’s Beer Cheese ($5.99) to Rib Slabs (1/4 slab $10.99; 1/2 slab $14.99; full slab $18.99) and juicy steaks to Top Shelf Burgers ($11.99) and Fish & Chips ($12.99).

t1

Tucker’s also is incredibly family-friendly (kudos for the diaper changing station in the men’s room) and offers a menu for kiddos 12 and under, with all entrees priced at $4.45 and served with Fries or Scalloped Apples and Chocolate Pudding.

But what Tucker’s – the consummate sports restaurant with a full bar – also offers is an easy, appetizing way to stick to your diet, if you’re into that kind of thing.

For starters, you can order lunch-sized portions anytime. The Sirloin ($8.99) is oz. of USDA choice beef cooked to your liking and served with one side. Try it with Steamed Broccoli and add a Sweet Potato ($3.29), and you have the perfect mix of protein and carbohydrates.

If seafood is more up your alley, try the Salmon ($15.99 or $13.99 for the lunch size), the Grilled Tuna Steak ($13.99) or the Shrimp Dinner ($13.99), which you can order blackened or grilled (or fried).

t2Veggie fans should try the Vegetarian Delight ($9.99), a fresh Tucker’s Salad and your choice of three sides, which include Fluffy Baked Potato, Mashed Potatoes, Baked Beans, Country Green Beans, Creamy Coleslaw, French Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Savory Sauteed Mushrooms, Sweet Potato, Onion Rings, Scalloped Apples and Steamed Broccoli.

There are a number of salads on the menu: The Tucker’s Salad ($4.99) is a bed of fresh greens topped with vegetables, tomatoes, cheese, bacon and egg. To keep it healthy/healthier, either request the bacon and cheese on the side or request the salad without them. Try the Chicken Salad ($9.99), which is a portion of grilled or blackened (or fried) chicken, or the Salmon Salad ($12.99), both of which are served on a giant – seriously – Tucker’s Salad.

A word of advice: Don’t overlook the Burgers & More portion of the menu. The Wild Alaskan Burger ($10.99) is a delicious, house-made salmon burger. The Bison Burger ($12.99) and Veggie Burger ($8.99) are both scrumptious. The Chicken Sandwich ($8.99) is, too, and can be ordered charbroiled or blackened (or fried).

If you’re one who believes in moderation, try Tucker’s Ice Cream Cookie ($4.99) at the end of your healthy meal. Added bonus if you share the giant, fresh, baked-to-order chocolate chunk cookie with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and chocolate and caramel sauce with a companion or two or more. You’ll cut the calories and your tablemates will be thrilled.

From the Editor | December-January 2016/17

A FEW MONTHS AGO, I met with Jessica Bostock and her husband, John, who is featured on our cover. Despite the fact that he is battling a serious form of brain cancer and was originally told in July 2015 that he only had six to 12 months to live, the couple exuded hope and a fervent refusal to give up. They also bostockexpressed a willingness to share their story, and I’m so grateful that they have in this issue of Extol. The Bostocks tale — which is far from over — is a beautiful example of triumph over tragedy and proof that no matter what is occurring in our lives, we have the power to choose hope over helplessness and inspire others to do the same.

So Sharp

Guess the cat is out of the bag – or should I say the cardinal? – now that we can officially announce Todd Sharp, head coach of the University of Louisville’s Ladybirds, will star in his own reality show on Lifetime. We featured Todd, who also coaches the Floyd Central Dazzlers, on our August/September cover in an article we titled, “So Sharp.” According to the championship coach (who’s known for his no-holds-barred approach to life), his reality show will be called, fittingly, “So Sharp.” You can say you saw it here first. Filming for the first season of the show, which is produced by Collins Avenue, should begin no later than January.

Extol on the Move

Nearly two years ago, my husband, Jason Applegate, and I debuted Extol Magazine, a publication with a mission of celebrating Southern Indiana.

The first person who invested in our dream was John Neace, a longtime New Albany resident and successful businessman who is known for leading a life of integrity and valuing people based on their word.

Thankfully, John believed in what we wanted to accomplish and, along with Vitor Bueno, who is now with 3 Crown Capital, silently put forth the investment as minority ownership partners that, combined with everything Jason and I had in our savings, made Extol come to fruition and flourish, thanks to you, our readers, and the talented Extol Team.

Recently, we made the decision to accept the opportunity to operate under John’s private equity company, Neace Ventures, which is headed up by President Brad Estes and includes Old 502 Winery, Brownies “The Shed” Grille & Bar, Falls City Brewing Co., Louisville City FC pro soccer team, Blue River Cabinetry, AllTerrain Paving & Construction and many other locally-owned and operated businesses in the portfolio.

While Jason and I will continue to guide Extol and remain focused on our mission of celebrating — and serving — the Southern Indiana community, becoming a part of the Neace Ventures family is going to give us growth opportunities, the likes of which will benefit you. We can’t wait to share what happens next.

As always, thank you for taking the time to read Extol.

Yours truly,

Angie Fenton
